This year marked the first time ever that the Forney High School and North Forney High School football teams faced each other in a regular season game. The game earned its name the Unity Bowl partially based on the fact that the game is one of the biggest events in the community that brings a significant amount of the people in Forney together in one place at one time. The event also provided an opportunity for the community to come together to support and help out their fellow citizens.
“We thought a food drive during Unity Bowl week would be a great opportunity for the families in Forney to donate food items for families that might need help during the upcoming holidays,” said Larry Coker, Director of Communications for the Forney Independent School District. “And the citizens proved once again what a great community Forney is. The number of food items donated during the drive was phenomenal. The items will go a long way to help a lot of people in the community.”
Rhea Elementary School had the largest amount of food items donated during the week. The students and staff of the school collected a total of 1,473 donations during the food drive. Warren Middle School had the second highest amount of donations with 1,258 and Crosby Elementary School collected a total of 1,246 food items.
“The parents, students and staff here at Crosby Elementary were so grateful to all of the people who helped them after the tornado in April of this year that they wanted to give something back,” said Jana Garner, Crosby Elementary School Principal. “It’s just one more act of kindness I have seen in this community that just continues to prove over and over again what incredible people live in Forney.”
On Friday, Oct. 26, Forney ISD Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Cadets (AFJROTC) went to every school in the District and loaded the food donations onto a truck and then unloaded the food at the Forney Food Pantry.
The food drive will be an annual event that will take place during the week of the Unity Bowl.
